Description: Provides animal shelter and adoptions, low cost spay/neuter clinic, low cost basic preventive veterinary services targeting low income pet owners.
Mission: The mission of the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City is to help reduce pet overpopulation through offering low-cost spay/neuter services and preventative veterinary care for low-income families who could otherwise not afford these services. By doing so, we are being proactive in helping to reduce pet overpopulation and keep existing pets within our community healthy. The community we serve is the entire Kansas City metropolitan area in which 2002 Census figures show as having a population of 1,578,638 with an average household income of $30,000. Our clinic is purposely located in Wyandotte County, Kansas as this is an impoverished, underserved area with a family poverty rate of 12.5% (1% higher than the national average) and a high incidence rate of chained and free-roaming dogs and cats. In 2003, our organization provided low-cost services to over 12,425 animals, of which nearly 3,000 were spays and neuters. With an approximate incidence rate of 45,000 pets housed in animal shelters or animal control facilities annually in Kansas City and a euthanasia rate of approximately 50% (22,500 pets), our goal is to reduce this number through low-cost preventative services.
