STAND! For Families Free of Violence is committed to promoting safe and strong families. We lead the community in ending domestic violence and child abuse and rebuilding lives. Our programs are designed to surround, confront, and end the problem of family violence through research-based practices.
Domestic violence and child abuse often co-occur in families, resulting in a complex web of problems that affects the children most of all. Children who are abused experience symptoms of trauma, including anxiety, depression, difficulties at school, anger, aggression, cognitive and learning deficits, medical illness, social withdrawal, impulsivity, and much more. Victims of childhood abuse are at higher risk for substance abuse, arrest, incarceration, and continued victimization as adults.
Most instances of abuse and neglect take place within the home. Younger children and infants are particularly vulnerable as they lack the physical, emotional, verbal, and social resources to defend themselves or to get help. Child abuse includes neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse.
STAND! strives to protect and heal abused children, empowering adult survivors of domestic violence to access their potential and achieve their most important goals. Victim safety and offender accountability are paramount to STAND!’s mission. We offer crisis and counseling services to survivors of family violence, parenting education to at-risk young fathers and mothers, and treatment groups for offenders.
STAND! believes that family violence is a primary root cause of neighborhood violence, cyclical poverty, substance abuse problems, mental health disorders, and more. It negatively impacts neighborhood and family safety and well-being. STAND! confronts the problem where violence is learned – in the home. By building safe and strong family units, we aim to stop violence and strengthen the bonds within families.
