About my nonprofit:
LUCKY DOG RESCUE LUCKY DOG RESCUE
Lucky Dog Rescue has greatly evolved since March 2004. It all began with one person who started saving one dog at a time. In the beginning, the rescue was a Dalmatian only rescue but it wasn't long before...

My personal message:

Cheveyo & Eskasi need our help! Their family on the reservation was not able to take care of them which has resulted in starvation and severe tick infestation. They have also been fighting off coyotes which, sadly, the other animals at the home were not able to do successfully. These sweet pups have a loving personality and just need some vet attention to get them back on their feet. Please help us cover their costs until we can find them a forever home.

7/17 - Megan got them to Scottsdale Vet today and they were given a bath and a dip. There is no way to explain how sad they looked. Their little spirits were broken. The dogs were so badly covered in ticks that the poor vet techs had to wear large garbage bags over them while they bathed the dogs.  After their bath they were wrapped in towels and fell asleep. Their blood work shows they have Heartworm and Tick Fever. :( Treatment is starting but these little guys have a rough road a head of them. BIG THANK YOU to the staff at Scottsdale Vet for getting them cleaned up.

7/19 - We have decided to rename them. There are lots of Buster's out there and Schamuck sounded too much like stomach. We wanted these dogs to have strong names but keep their Native American "roots." So Buster is now Cheveyo (spirit warrior) and Schamuck is now Eskasi (brave). These boys are definitely fighters. The ticks have greatly decreased but I think we have a couple more days until we are done with them. The boys don't see to mind them and are just happy to be in a cool place with regular servings of food and some medicine to help with their infections! Eskasi is starting to get his energy back and a little wiggle in his butt. He smiles when he sees us and his tail just wags away. Cheveyo has had his second round of heartworm medicine and is still a little lethargic but his eyes do shine and his tail wags when he sees us.

7/22 - We have good news and bad news. Let's start with the bad so we end with the good. Cheveyo has tested positive for Valley Fever. The doctor is optomistic that he will be fine. They are both eating like chow hounds and are more energetic each day. The vet techs say they wag their tails like crazy everytime they come by and the ticks are almost totally gone! Yippee! We hope to have them out of isolation soon and into a foster home. We don't have a specific home yet so if you are interested in caring for these babies, please let us know.

7/28 - I promise I will update the pictures this week. I was sick all weekend and unable to get over there to see these guys. The vet techs and doctors tell me Eskasi is still doing good. He is responding to the medication well and is just a happy guy. They both like the new toys they have and are making the best out of being in boarding. Cheveyo has been hit the worst with all the illnesses and is still lethargic but not too tired to wag that tail. His stomach was enlarged so Dr. Wright did an x-ray and noticed his heart was enlarged but could not make out a reason for it and we were going to have to take him to a specialist. That word alone means money. Cheveyo must have little angels looking out for him because it just so happened today that a heart specialist, Dr. Page,  came in and decided to take a look at him for FREE. He did an ultra sound and some x-rays and was able to tell Dr. Wright at Scottsdale Vet what type of surgery needed to be done. It turns out that Cheveyo has a sack of fluid on his heart that must be removed because it is preventing his heart from working properly which leads to everything else not working properly.  Dr. Wright and the rest of the staff at Scottsdale Vet say he still has a good chance of surviving because he has such a happy and loving spirit to him. Say little puppy prayers for Dr. Wright and Cheveyo that the surgery on Thursday goes well.

7/31 – HE DID IT! Cheveyo made it through about 5 hours of heart surgery yesterday. We did not get the call that he was ok until 8:30. Dr. Wright said everything went well and now it is up to Cheveyo. In terms I could understand, the doctors explained that the Valley Fever had attacked his heart and caused the sack around his heart to fill with fluid. His heart was therefore not able to pump properly and we had a very narrow window (48 hours) to get the fluid removed or Cheveyo would have lost the battle. But this guy is living up to his name and being a warrior. As soon as he saw me this morning he wagged his tail and kept a good beat on the side of his kennel. He could not get up because he is heavily sedated, in a body wrap, and has a couple tubes in him. He is also hooked up to a few machines. Despite that he is still wagging his tail. J He is a trooper! The doctors say it will still be a couple weeks before he is in the clear. Eskasi is feeling much better and definitely ready to get out of that kennel. We went for a short walk this morning and he just wants to run and play. Eskasi is still thin but is putting on weight. He will be neutered soon and ready to go to foster, if anyone is interested please let us know.

8/6 - These boys are doing great. Eskasi was neutered today and goes into foster tomorrow. Boy is he ready to get out of that kennel too. Cheveyo is a completely different dog! He is off the machines and out of the wraps. His entire right side is shaved and you can see the stitches down the side of his ribs. That doesn't matter though becasue it is so wonderful to see him alert and active. He is bright and happy and wagging his tail all the time. The staff says all he wants to do is go for walks now. This is the most energy he has had since we first got him. It is so wonderful to see the changes in bothe of these boys. We have about another week before Cheveyo is in the clear but all of us at LDR, Dr. Wright, and the wonderful staff at Scottsdale Vet have no doubt that he is going to beat everything and make someone a great dog. After all, he is a warrior ;)

8/10 - I am so happy to report that these boys are doing great. Eskasi is now in foster and learning what it is to be in a safe and healthy home. Cheveyo gets another round of heartworm medicine and neutered tomorrow. He is doing so well. It is almost as if he is a different dog. He is happy and playful and so full of energy now. All he wants to do is play and go for walks.  If you think you may be interested in fostering Cheveyo please let us know.

8/22 - Eskasi is loving his foster home. He gets to run 4 miles everyday and play with the other dog in the house. Eskasi even gets to go on road trips to Flagstaff (see picture). He is having a blast. Cheveyo is being fostered by one of the vet techs at Scottsdale Vet. Again I think these dogs have angels looking out for them because Cheveyo's foster noticed something wasn't right (not sure a normal foster would notice) and got him back to the vet this week. Good thing she did because he has an infection in his legs. He is once again on anitibiotics and forced rest. He is fighter though so I am sure he will be back to running around again very soon. Thanks for checking in on their progress.
