My personal message:
Thank you for visiting the St. George GOYA Hoop-a-thon website.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to our fundraising efforts.

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
A Hoop-a-thon is a fun-filled basketball event, in which sponsored individuals shoot from the foul line and sink as many baskets as possible in the designated time period. The St. George GOYA is hosting a Shoot for the Cure Hoop-a-thon to raise money for individuals who are suffering from Huntington's Disease. There are over 30,000 people in the United States currently diagnosed with HD and each of their siblings and children have a 50% chance of developing this Disease. Huntington's Disease: a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is, at present, no effective treatment or cure. HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, think, talk and reason. Eventually, the person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care. Huntington's Disease profoundly affects the lives of entire families -- emotionally, socially and economically. Early symptoms of Huntington's Disease may affect cognitive ability or mobility and include depression, mood swings, forgetfulness, clumsiness, involuntary twitching and lack of coordination. As the disease progresses, concentration and short-term memory diminish and involuntary movements of the head, trunk and limbs increase. Walking, speaking and swallowing abilities deteriorate. Eventually the person is unable to care for him or herself. Death follows from complications such as choking, infection or heart failure. HD typically begins in mid-life, between the ages of 30 and 45, though onset may occur as early as the age of 2. Children who develop the juvenile form of the disease rarely live to adulthood. This is why we are so passionate to find answers. We are fighting against time, in order to save the families affected by HD. We have found a great way to help-through the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) Shoot for a cure. We will be participating at the St. George Greek Orthodox Church to help raise funds for the care and cure of HD, and you can help too! Simply make a donation to this web site, and we'll do the rest! With your support, we hope to raise a significant amount of money for the Huntington's Disease Society of America. Please stand with us against this devastating disease by making a flat donation of whatever you can afford. Not only will you help us to achieve our goal, but you'll also be helping the HDSA to fund vital research, education, and services for all those affected by HD. Thank you for joining a growing number of individuals who are all focused on one goal- curing Huntington's Disease and making this the "last generation with HD." We look forward to your support. Together we can make a difference.
