Taking Back Lives
US Programs
Taking Back Lives was founded by a 16-year-old girl, and since that time TBL's commitment to youth has been at the heart of the organization. Today's young people are a well-informed, global population who are looking for opportunities to make a difference that are engaging, authentic, and relevant to their lives.
Youth involvement is apparent in every aspect of TBL from serving on our board of directors to utilizing skills and talents in a wide range of intern postiions. Our goal is to empower young people to realize that they have a voice and the ability to positively impact their communities and beyond!
Our US Programs include:
Making Your Mark Clubs
A student-led club in which participants learn about global issues such as poverty, health, gender inequality, etc. and design service projects to address these issues and create awareness.
Internships
Involving students in the day-to-day operations of a nonprofit organization through the matching of individual talents, skills, and interests to Taking Back Lives' organizational needs.
Fundraising Events
Participating in events such as our Sunset Walk or our popular Rock Out for a Cause are just some of the many ways in which students can become directly involved in the raising of much-needed funds to support our work in Malawi.
Malawi Programs
As one of the poorest countries in the world, Malawi's many problems - all stemming from severe poverty - will not be solved overnight. It will require a long-term investment and holistic approach, with an emphasis on developing children into future leaders with the capacity and skills to pull themsleves, the community, and quite possibly the nation, out of despair.
Taking Back Lives is committed to implementing projects that equip the Mazembe Village in the Nkhata Bay District with the tools and resources needed to achieve permanent change. Through TBL's local Malawian team and input from village leaders and members, we strive to actively engage the community as stakeholders in all that we do.
School-Building Projects
Building solar-powered classrooms to reduce severe overcrowding, provide access to computer technology, and extend classroom use after school hours for community activities.
Scholarship Program
Scholarships for qualifying students to further their education in secondary school.
Teacher Development
Assisting local adults to become teachers in order to reduce high student-teacher ratios, and offering additional training for existing teachers to improve effectiveness with students.
Adult Literacy Classes
Providing adults in the community with access to English literacy classes and opportunities to utilize these skills to address specific needs through practical applications.
Community Development Program
implementation of a wide variety of programs comprised of health education, agriculture, and culturally relevant income-generating projects to assist the local communty in riasing itself out of poverty.
