 Team Sean 2009 began with the idea of two friends who share (amongst a lot of other friends) a love of running and our love and appreciation for the man (my husband, her friend) Sean Murphy who is bravely battling cancer.  Sean was diagnosed in June 2008 during a week long stay at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary for breathing difficulties, and under the care of Dr. Phillip Song, with Stage 4 laryngeal cancer.  While there, he had a trach put in place to help him breathe more clearly, which he continues to use today.  It was during this procedure that his cancer was discovered. 

Since his diagnosis Sean has undergone aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments at Mass General Hospital.  He continues to be seen monthly at Mass Eye and Ear by Dr. Song and his team to monitor his progress with the trach and his therapy.

Always in good health and great shape, Sean's case is unusual.  Still, the percentages of head and neck cancers, 5% overall, amongst all cancers, continues to rise each year.

Donnalee and I have made the running of this year's Boston Marathon for Team Eye and Ear, with a fundraising goal of $6,000, to go towards the research of head and neck cancers our mission.  We are looking forward to the marathon itself and reaching our goal in honor of Sean and all others who continue to fight and conquer their illnesses each day. Sean peacefully passed away on March 20th, 2009 .  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
