My personal message:

Melanoma is dramatically underfunded compared to other cancers if you look at the total research dollars allocated divided by the total incidence of melanoma.  The Melanoma Research Foundation is a charity dedicated to advancing medical research and developing new treatments for late stage melanoma.  After exhaustive research, we feel confident that donating to this group is the single best way to help address the underfunding problem.  We need your help to meet this goal.  Collectively we can make a difference.  Learn more about the Melanoma Research Foundation at www.melanoma.org

TED'S STORY:  In 2000, Ted had a small melanoma removed from his neck. The spot was about the size of a pencil eraser. At that time, there was only about a 5% chance that the melanoma would return. After 5 years of clean follow up visits, the chances of the melanoma returning fell to about 1%. Dec 2006 Ted found a lima bean size lump around his collar bone. 2 lymph nodes came back positive for melanoma, meaning the Stage III disease.  30 lymph nodes were removed from Ted's neck. Surgery was followed radiation and then a year of interferon. Jan 2008 Ted found another lump in his neck.  Another surgery removed another 12 nodes from his neck, followed by more radiation.

Your donation will help create a MRF Career Development Award in Ted’s name.  These grants are a means to encourage junior investigators to enter the field of melanoma research. These grants provide up to $50,000 per year for two years.  For 2008, MRF funded eight second-year projects and six first-year projects.

UPDATE JUN 2008:  Regular scans revealed a pea size tumors in the middle of Ted’s brain   We are stunned and deeply sad to be Stage IV.

UPDATE OCT 2008:  Ted underwent radiosurgery to blast out the brain tumor.  This months scans shows no new growth and no evidence of active disease (Ya-HOO).  Ted has just finished up 2 months of participation in an immunovaccine clinical trial at U.Va.  (Say a prayer and cross your fingers!)  On Nov 2 Ted and about 25 friends will run as team Go To Hell Mel in a half and full marathon.  Details at www.gotohellmel.org.  The fight continues.....
