Welcome and thank you for visiting The Lungest Mile’s 2009 fundraising website for The Relay! On May 2nd-3rd, The Lungest Mile Team will run The Relay to promote organ donation.

The Relay (www.therelay.com) is a 199-mile race where a 12-member team runs 36 legs through 36 cities, starting in Calistoga on Saturday and ending on the beach in Santa Cruz on Sunday.  The Relay is sponsored by a non-profit organization, Organs ‘R’ Us, and is held to promote the need for organ donation. In The Relay, the transfer of the baton from runner to runner symbolizes the transfer of an organ from donor to recipient. 
 
The Lungest Mile ran The Relay in 2008 with terrific success by raising over $20,000 for Organs ‘R’ Us and by finishing the 199-mile course in a total team time of 30 hours, 26 minutes and 47 seconds. Our team is ready, willing, and able (sort of) to tackle this challenge again for such a wonderful cause, and we hope that you’ll support our goal to surpass last year’s accomplishments!
 
The 2009 Lungest Mile Team is a great team of runners and volunteers from around the world, including Southern California (Los Angeles and Pasadena), New York (Southampton and East Hampton), Washington D.C., Northern California (Menlo Park, Sunnyvale, and San Francisco), Massachusetts, and London, England! We’re lucky to have assembled such a great team this year, which includes Marc Kenny (Captain), Bryan Kenny (Captain), Marge Kenny, Lisa Kenny-Bass, Bob Jensen, Mike Fountain, Ian Burton, Rob Almeraz, Rickey Ono, Karen Hourigan, John Grant, Eamonn Markham, Aira Offutt, Vince Tsai, Michael McCarthy, and John Meehan.
 
The Lungest Mile is led by Marc and Bryan Kenny, two sons of Stephen R. Kenny. SRK received the miracle of a single lung transplant in August of 2000 after suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for over fifteen years.   After his transplant in 2000 and prior to his passing in January 2007, SRK “spread the good word” (as he would say) about the power of organ donation. He frequently walked Torrey Pines State Reserve or the surrounding La Jolla area wearing a bright yellow vest with “LUNG TRANSPLANT 8-20-00” written on the back and would stop to talk to anyone interested to hear about the journey of organ donation. Do you see picture to the left? That’s SRK at the Grand Canyon a year after his transplant!   This year’s Relay is dedicated to SRK as well as to Shawn Stockwell and Arnav Kalra!
