Run ~ Ride ~ Inspire
Hurricane (Larisa) and Pegasus (Terri) are at it again this year. Last years training regime got us a little punchy and we realized that Larisa's shoes were Hurricanes and Terri's were Pegasus. Hence, The Fundraising Adventures of Hurricane and Pegasus were born.
Again this year, we are taking on THREE challenges in THREE months in hopes of raising THREE thousand dollars to support The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation AND to support the incredible women faced with the challenges that TNBC imposes on their lives.
This years events won't be quite as spectacular since it seems that Hurricane is going to have a baby in October. But, we just had to do our trio of events again this year!
Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is a subtype of breast cancer that affects about 15% of breast cancer patients. It is negative to the three hormone receptors for which targeted treatments are currently available. While TNBC is responsive to chemotherapy, it does not respond to targeted treatments available for hormone positive cancers and it is more likely to metastasize.

We have been touched personally by TNBC. In 2005, Mama Funk was diagnosed with TNBC. She endured the challenges of chemotherapy, radiation, and constant medical appointments and we thought she was done dealing with cancer. Just before Christmas 2007, we learned that that wasn't the case. The cancer was back and had metastasized.
While we saw our struggles in 2008, over all it was a pretty good year and Mama has been able to enjoy a Chemo break for a large portion of the year. This is at least in part due to the fact that one of her grandsons has a magic rock. He wished on that rock that Mama would grow her hair back and right after he made that wish, we were blessed with cancer free scans. That is some rock!
While Mama was able to enjoy a large break from chemo this past year, her cancer does seem to be following typical TNBC paths. The doctors did diagnose a spot on her brain that was treated with Gama Knife (no masses currently detected), and recently they diagnosed spots on her bones which they are currently treating with 10 sessions of radiation. They are also watching a spot in her chest, but not yet treating that spot as it has made no progression!
We have had enough of TNBC and we've decided to take on a few challenges of our own in support of her, and other women faced with the challenges of living with TNBC. We want a cure, and nothing less.
