Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support German Shepherd Rescue of Central Alabama's (GSRCA) fundraising effort for one of our very special dogs.

GSRCA is proud to introduce Turke! He's a really terrific young dog that we rescued from the Shelby County Humane Society in Columbiana, AL in September 2007. We didn't know it when we named him, but "Turke" is an English name that means 'headstrong'. And he is going to need that determination to overcome what the next few months will bring his way.

According to Dr. Milton - an orthopedic vet specialist in Birmingham, Turke was probably hit by a car before the age of three months. The xrays show his hips are a real mess. Neither hip is in it's socket and there are signs that old breaks have already healed. The type of surgery that Turke needs is called "FHO" or "Femoral Head Osteoectomy".

What is the femoral head ostectomy (FHO) procedure? Femoral head ostectomy is removal or excision of the ball portion of the hip joint. After removal, the bone is smoothed so there is no bone to bone contact occurring between the pelvis and the remaining portion of the femur. Removal of the portion of the femur that articulates with the hip joint then causes formation of a false fibrous joint.

Estimated cost of surgery is $1200 per hip.

Turke will need 3-6 months of rehab, which includes exercise and swim therapy, to recouperate from each hip surgery. Dogs that have this procedure (even on both hips) usually do quite well and go on to lead a normal life.

Turke is just the sweetest boy with so much character! He is truly an exceptional dog. GSRCA cannot deny him the chance at that life, but we need help financially to make this happen.
