October is nationally recognized as
Down Syndrome Awareness month
To promote this month, our group, like many others, host a Buddy Walk with 3 main goals:
*To promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome
*To raise funds locally and nationally for education, research and advocacy programs
*To enhance the position of the Down syndrome community, enabling us to positively influence local and national policy and practice
This event raises funds to promote awareness for all individuals with Down syndrome. In addition, funds raised for our Buddy Walk through Up With Downs will be used to help pay for “Precious Gifts” kits for new parents, advocacy training, books and materials for families, for our annual social gatherings, and a portion goes to our National Down Syndrome Society. We are striving to continue to add additional resources for our families this year. We would love to speak with you in more detail about ways you can help to make those big plans come true if you have additional questions.
Our annual Buddy Walk, on Saturday, October 19, at LSUS campus is a day filled with fun while building awareness and acceptance beginning with our ceremonial walk around the campus including little ones in strollers & wagons and teams of supporters whose lives have been touched by a loved one with Down syndrome. We will spend the day gathering with families, friends, and supporters of our goal to celebrate our loved ones with Down syndrome including lunch, music, jumpers, and face painting. You can be a part of our Buddy Walk story this year by joining our Up With Downs volunteer team or Buddy Walk team. Employees could participate and raise a donation from your business or organization with a “Denim for Down syndrome” day or collect “Dimes for Down syndrome.” You may also make a tax free donation directly to FirstGiving.com/upwithdowns or by mailing a check made out to Up With Downs and writing “Buddy Walk Donation” in the notes section in lieu of walking with us that day. If your business is able to donate goods or products that could be used during our event as door prizes or to assist with services provided, we welcome your involvement in making this year an even BIGGER success! We hope to see you on Saturday, October 19 at LSUS, and appreciate your generosity in advance.
