The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics Athletes and the community.
Special Olympics Wake County helps accomplish this mission by offering training in 17 sports each year for regional and state wide tournamnets hosted by SONC.
Wake County also offers 4 large local competitions. In conjunction with Wake County School System and
Raleigh
Parks and Recreation we are able to hold three large local competitions in Basketball Skills, Bowling, and
Athletics, where we get a majority of the athletes for these events through dedicated special education teachers who organize and train their students according to our guidelines. Special Olympics Wake County also offers a Multi-State Swim Meet that is open to Special Olympics Swim Teams from across the southeast .
