"Thanks on Thanksgiving Time"

Thinking of Thanksgiving brings back memories of when I first joined the Boston Living Center’s Thanksgiving dinner “celebration of life”. I remember it was very difficult being in a different country, being HIV positive, not knowing anyone and being isolated at home. One day I was invited to visit the Boston Living Center for lunch. I recall I was totally apprehensive that I would see other people living with HIV/AIDS, and I didn’t know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised at everything I saw.

I became a member of the Center right after my first visit. And it became a very important part of my life, my home away from home. The Center gave me the opportunity to obtain knowledge about how to cope with HIV and also gave me the chance to meet great number of people – all wonderful individuals – from whom I learned a great deal.

Speaking of being grateful, the Boston Living Center’s thanksgiving dinner “Celebration of Life” that’s one of the most wonderful experiences offered by the Center to all its members, their families and friends, and all the amazing volunteers. Every time I walk through the Hynes Auditorium Convention Center doors for the center’s dinner, my experience is the same as the first time. I feel moved with all the emotions wrapped in hugs, smiles, camaraderie, and sadness for not seeing lost friends, happiness for seeing the ones I still have. And appreciative of having the opportunity to share this experience for one more year.

This year is our 25th Anniversary and as usual, I am volunteering as have done so, since 1994 as the translator and interpreter (English/Spanish) for the evening program. Work that I love to do and an honor to be volunteering and representing our members. This brings me joy and I feel thankful for having this chance one more year.

I look very much forward to seeing you and working with you on Tuesday November 25, 2014. And for those that would like to join my team and help me raise funds please do so and or if you’d like to create your own team that would be awesome!

I am glad and thankful of being part of the Victory Programs - Boston Living Center’s Community!
