Why Ironstone Farm & Challenge Unlimited?

My daughter, Kaity, volunteered for years with an equine therapy program and we learned firsthand about the incredible, life-changing impact equine therapy can have.  Kids make up 80% of the people helped by Challenge Unlimited at Ironstone Farm in Andover MA . . . kids with autism, muscular distrophy, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and other physical and/or mental disabilities.  How can a horse help?  The horse provides a three-dimensional movement for the rider which mimics the natural movement of one's hips while walking. When this movement is felt by a rider, it promotes leg and core muscle strength, better balance; trains the brain for the development of new muscle reactions, promotes better reflexes, and much more.  And getting on a horse for people facing these challenges provides something that is difficult to measure but maybe more important than any other benefit: Inspiration, accomplishment and self-esteem.  I've seen it.  It works.  And it's magical.

Why the Boston Marathon?

I was on Boylston Street a few minutes after finishing the 2013 Boston Marathon when the ground shook . . . turning to the west, the plumes of smoke from the bombs slowly filled the street and then the town turned upside down.  Boston is calling me back for the 118th running of the world's oldest and greatest marathon.  This is pilgrimage of remembrance, respect, resilience and redemption.

Join me on this journey back to Boston and let's do some good along the way!

p.s. Take 6 minutes and watch the Ironstone Farm video to see how your donation helps these incredible kids and their families. Pretty cool.

p.s.s. Tami and I are donating $5000 which will be matched by a challenge gift from Doug & Diana Berthiaume.  Anything you can do to help, whether $5 or $50 or $500, is very much appreciated!
