On Saturday, October 22nd of last year, just 3 weeks shy of her second birthday, Gianna pulled a cup of scolding hot tea off of the counter. She was taken to the ER and a team from St. Christopher’s Hospital picked her up and transported her to their facility. She was admitted to the ICU/Burn Unit where she would spend the next 4 long days.
On day one she had her burns assessed. She was put under while they did a complete wash of her face and removed all of the blisters and had to take her down to a bleeding skin. We were not sure at that point how bad the burns were and how much of her face would need skin grafts.
On day two, Dr. Davis, an amazing plastic surgeon, met with us before taking Gianna into surgery. He explained that a synthetic skin would be placed over her entire face and that we would not have to take skin from any other part of her body. Nobody could have prepared me for what was about to happen or what she was going to look like when surgery was over.
On day three, she was sitting up in bed and we were seeing some of her personality come back to life.
On day four, she was doing so well that Dr. Davis decided she was ready to come home.
There were weekly visits back to the hospital. Those weekly visits turned into monthly visits. Gianna had her “Final” visit at the end of August and given a clean bill of health.
Gianna is such a fighter! It has been a long road but thanks to the team of doctors and nurses at St. Christopher’s Hospital and Dr. Davis’ team, I am happy to report that Gianna has made a full recovery. If you were to see her today, she looks like nothing ever happened.
We will be holding a Beef and Beer to support St. Christopher’s Hospital, specifically their Burn Unit. We would like you to join us in celebrating Gianna’s amazing recovery, honor Dr. Davis our incredible surgeon and help us to raise as much money as we can. All proceeds will be donated to St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children and designated to the Burn Center
