The MS Run the US 2016 Relay:
Is a 3,000-mile relay across America to raise awareness and funds to help CURE multiple sclerosis (MS)! The Relay begins on April 9th, 2016  in Los Angeles, CA and is completed in August 2016 in New York, NY.

Sixteen (16) runners have been selected to run on average 170-miles over six consecutive days during their individually assigned segment. Each runner dedicates a week of running on the road with the Relay, while collectively the Relay spans a distance and duration of 3,000-miles in 4 months.Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!

What is MS?

As the National Multiple Sclerosis Society describes it, "Multiple sclerosis (MS) involves an immune-mediated process in which an abnormal response of the body’s immune system is directed against the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. The exact antigen — or target that the immune cells are sensitized to attack — remains unknown, which is why MS is considered by many experts to be 'immune-mediated' rather than 'autoimmune.'"

  • Within the CNS, the immune system attacks myelin — the fatty substance that surrounds and insulates the nerve fibers — as well as the nerve fibers themselves.
  • The damaged myelin forms scar tissue (sclerosis), which gives the disease its name.
  • When any part of the myelin sheath or nerve fiber is damaged or destroyed, nerve impulses traveling to and from the brain and spinal cord are distorted or interrupted, producing a wide variety of symptoms.
  • The disease is thought to be triggered in a genetically susceptible individual by a combination of one or more environmental factors.
  • People with MS typically experience one of four disease courses, which can be mild, moderate or severe.

Those who know me know I am tenacious and generally have a "never give up" attitude about things. I come by that naturally.  I tend to strive to give my all to almost anything I set my heart and mind to, whether its music or running. That's why I signed up for the 2016 MS Run the US Relay.  Running the Relay in 2014 just wasn't enough! I was given the gift and love of running and endurance sports by my dad who was an avid cyclist, and now lives with MS. His diagnosis has taught me to fight for my dreams, and more importantly, to never give up!

When I ran the Relay in 2014, I encountered several challenges, from running uphill all day, to running cold and wet in the snow, to a knee that put me put off the road for a day. Those experiences were a small and humbling dose of what those with MS live with every day. We, as runners, might be out there toughing out hard miles for one week, but those with Multiple Sclerosis face this grueling marathon every single day.  They cannot get off the road. I also learned that just like those with MS and in life, I needed a team. It takes love and support from family, friends, and even the community.

I'm part of the 2016 MS Run the US Relay because I totally believe that by "Running Farther to Serve Others" we will and we must continue to do everything we can to create a world free of MS! This is why I run.
