There’s Something About Mary
Mary…… wife, mother, sister, daughter, and one of my new friends. A busy person, like so many of us, Mary was consumed with her love of family, work, and living a full and enriching life. And then, last summer, breast cancer strikes, and life as she knows it takes a different course. Like others that get this dreadful diagnosis, her life has now taken on a whole new meaning. Day to day, the casual routines we all take for granted are now arduous tasks sandwiched between surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Certainly, the treatment is an awful journey at best, but, as they say, a necessary road to recovery.
I have grown to know Mary through her sister Jennifer Wessell, who I work with at City Hall while volunteering in the Mayors office on Thursdays. From first learning of Mary’s diagnosis, I have watched Jen immerse herself in the education and discovery of the many procedures and treatments of this disease, while doing everything she can to help and support her dear sister. Being a sister myself, I know the special emotional connection Jen has with Mary and while she would do anything she could to make it all go away or at least ease her pain and fatigue, Jen also realizes a better treatment for Mary and so many others comes about because people care to raise funds that will truly help to make a difference. For almost two decades the annual NSMC Cancer Walk has been a means of contributing to that difference, raising millions on the North Shore for the better care of all the Mary’s battling cancer.
Mary’s treatment is ongoing, and so many people have certainly helped to keep Mary’s spirits up with cards of encouragement, phone calls, and offers to pitch in; all very important to her physical wellbeing. While we are hoping Mary will be well enough by spring to walk with us, Jen and I are hoping that you too will join our walking team and help raise funds for future cancer research and the improved treatments so important to Mary and so many other’s care and cure. We are excited about participating in this event and look forward to sharing the joy of sisterhood by walking with you for such a worthy cause. Certainly, the NSMC is only steps away from a cure. Steps we can make for Mary.

Co-Captains for Team Mary
And the April winner is:
Yesterday, Mary selected a name for the Two Night Getaway at the Amelia Payson House Bed & Breakfast from over 80 generous contributors to our NSMC Cancer Walk Team: There’s Something About Mary”. In the first of three drawings, we are happy to announce that Ron & Theresa Weik are the winners of April’s drawing. While we have two more drawings planned, one at the end of May and one at the end of June, we wish everyone continued good luck as all entrants will remain in the basket for all three drawings; a special thank you to the many that contributed early and so generously. With over $2900 raised so far, our team has remained in first place in generating fundraising dollars, but the real contest is finding a cure and having as many people raising as many dollars as we can to help in that effort. Many thanks to all of you that are following our team and especially all the team members that have set up web pages and have solicited your friends and family for donations. It started as one donation in a pool that has certainly rippled out way beyond any of our expectations. We are excited to have two more months to continue raising money. Just wait until you hear what is happening on May 9th.

Co-Captains: There’s Something About Mary
We placed our bets on the 2009 NSMC Cancer Walk…..
They might be calling us the booze and betting team, but last weekend, friends, and frequent guests of the Amelia Payson House, sponsored a Poker Tournament in Dix Hills, N.Y. on behalf of Ada & Jen’s NSMC Cancer Walk team, “There’s Something About Mary” and raised over $1450.00 with a wine raffle and poker night for charity. Hosted at the home of Terry, Frank, & Ali, their generous friends played cards and bet their chips all for the benefit of the NSMC Cancer Walk. As a new Cancer Walk team this year, Ada & Jen have been trying to come up with some fun and different ways to raise money in support of this well-established annual walk that will take place on June 21st. Although gaming wasn’t considered until suggested by Ada’s frequent guests from New York, the thought of taking money from Yankee fans, for charity, seemed perfectly acceptable.
May 15th, This weekend Terry and Ali are visiting Salem for their annual Mother/Daughter getaway so Ada seized the opportunity to have them meet team co-captain Jen, her sister Mary, who we are all walking for, and Rose from the NSMC Cancer Walk Development Office by hosting them for breakfast at the B&B this morning. It might have been the promise of those heart shaped waffles that got them here, but we all had a great time chatting and getting acquainted, before e-mails were exchanged and cameras started clicking.
When Jen & I casually talked last fall about having a cancer walking team for her sister Mary, we never could have imagined the outpouring of generosity and the number of participants Mary’s team would generate. With over $6200 raised to date, and more than 50 walkers strong, Mary’s family, friends and new friends, overwhelming responded to Salem’s Annual Cancer Walk event with a purpose of supporting Mary, to celebrate those that have beaten the disease, all while contributing much needed funds for the North Shore Medical Center.
If you have been following our website, Jen and I have been trying to come up with some fun and unconventional fund raising schemes. From Two(2) Night Getaways at the Amelia Payson House, to a Poker Tournament held by B&B friends/guests from New York, Wine raffles and Jewelry Party sales, it’s been a learning curve for sure. Jen and I even had a little fun when we made a video that we sent to the Poker party and put up on You Tube. Although gaming wasn’t considered until suggested by Ada’s frequent guests from New York, the thought of taking money from Yankee fans, seemed perfectly acceptable; all in fun and for charity.
Beyond our own fundraising, we have so many people to thank that have stepped up to support our team. One fundraising website quickly turned in to 15 firstgiving websites raising money for Mary’s team. Estee Lauder has sent thank you product for our walkers, Witch Tees has sponsored our t-shirts, and Vitamin Water has donated refreshment for all our walkers on June 21st. While we still have over three weeks before the walk, I expect we will have more people and companies to be thankful to as everyday brings a new surprise. Again, thank you for your donations and support. It is no surprise that we couldn’t have done it without you………
