Did you know that...
- The dismissal bell rings at most Boston Public Middle Schools at 1:30pm everyday?
- That students in these schools spend only 20% of their waking hours in school?
- That 40% of students in Boston will not graduate from high school?
15 years ago, Citizen Schools began the difficult work of tackling this problem at one school in Boston. Today, we have grown to serve nearly 4,400 students nationwide across seven states. Together with over 4,000 volunteers, we are a “second shift” of educators that are helping transform the way education is administered in this country. Through a series of “hands-on” apprenticeships, college visits, and close supervision and mentorship, our students are given the support they need to grow.
We DO make learning relevant and we DO believe in our students’ potential. And the results speak for themselves - 87% of students who participated in Citizen Schools are graduating high school in four years vs. 59% of students in the Boston Public Schools.
For the past 2 years, I've worked as the Operations Manager supporting our programs in Massachusetts serving nearly 2000 students. Every time I step foot in one of our classrooms, I am amazed by the achievement of our students and inspired by the dedication of our staff and volunteers who make their learning relevant and push them to reach their very best.
For a firsthand account of how powerful our program can be on the lives of students, click on the YouTube video to the left, to hear Arielys Morales address a crowd of 800 adults at our Annual Gala. Arielys is a Citizen Schools alumni who is now a Freshman at Northeastern University on a full scholarship!
If you can, please make a donation to my fundraising page. I am hoping to raise $1000 and your contribution will help support the critical work we are doing to impact the lives of low-income students in Boston and across the country. Your gift of any size will mean a tremendous amount to me.
Thank you for your support!
