Dear Friends and Family,

Thank you for taking part in my life and my family's life. I am excited to celebrate with everyone at my Bat Mitzvah celebration, right after Shavuot.

Art is a a great way for me to express myself. As part of my passion for art and my Bat Mitzvah, I would like to raise tzedakah for the art therapy program at Beit Issie Shapiro.

My great-grandfather was born in 1914 in Zhitomir in the Ukraine. He had cerebral palsy. Shlomoh ben Zaval haCohen and BatSheva Pishnov grew up, held a job, married, survived the siege on Leningrad and raised two Jewish children under Communism. Eventually they all moved to the United States. I am only here today because of my great-great grandparents’ struggle for therapeutic services.

If my great-grandfather had not had lived to adulthood in the the 1930’s with mild cerebral palsy would I be here?

Beit Issie Shapiro is an organization in Israel performing dedicated to children and adults with developmental disabilities to grow and to become functioning members of society. This organization is a national one, so kids all parts of Israeli society come to become part of the Beit Issie Shapiro community.

About Art Therapy at Beit Issie Shapiro
Art is a uniquely helpful therapeutic medium for several reasons. Since there is no right or wrong answer, it grants‘permission’ to the child or adult, to express himself or herself, freely, without censorship. Every product is valued; every contribution is prized. Children only receive positive feedback for their artistic creations. When these are pasted on the wall or into books and sent home, the child is rewarded by the interest and pride of his or her parents.

What is more, art is a medium through which children can not only express themselves, but can work through their emotional and psychological conflicts. It is therefore the medium that has greatest impact, in working therapeutically with children of all levels of ability.

My goal is to raise $1800 for art therapy at Beit Issie Shapiro. Keep in mind that Beit Issie receives very little government funding towards their programs!

Let’s work together to reach my goal!

Thank you,
Nava Rotenberg
