I'm running the Santa Barbara International Marathon -- my first Marathon -- in November 2011 to help change the future of spinal muscular atrophy or SMA, the leading genetic killer of young children.
I'm running for my daughter Gwendolyn. For those fighting SMA every second of every day. For those lost much too soon to this brutal disease. And for me.
Will you DONATE to help Team GSF reach our goal of raising $26,200 for the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation?
I’ve always wanted to run a marathon — it’s one of those goals I planned to “one day” check off my list. But, to be honest, the last time I ran -- at least before starting my training for the Santa Barbara International Marathon this year -- was home from my office the day my daughter Gwendolyn was diagnosed with SMA. That was over three years ago. She was just six-months-old.
Although not a household name, spinal muscular atrophy or SMA is the leading genetic killer of young children. 1 in 40 people unknowingly carry the gene responsible for SMA and 1 in every 6,000 babies born globally is born with this brutal disease. There is currently no treatment and no cure, but there is hope.
In 2009, my wife and I started a nonprofit organization, the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation (GSF), to fight alongside Gwendolyn and all of those battling SMA. Our goal is to change the future of this brutal disease -- to see the day when SMA is no longer terminal, but treatable. We are an all volunteer organization with no administrative expenses and 100% of donor support goes towards our cause. We're fighting to raise awareness. We're fighting to advance promising research. And we're fighting to make sure those impacted have what they need to thrive. Over the past two years, we've raised nearly $1 Million and we've had a material impact on this disease. But there is more work to be done and funding is a major factor in keeping the positive momentum building at every level.
I'll be running the Santa Barbara International Marathon in November 2011 to have an impact on this disease. I'll be running:
For those fighting SMA every second of every day.
For those lost much too soon to this brutal disease.
And for me.
How can you support us? Simple.
