Donations made on this First Giving page for I Can! Dance will be applied to their fundraiser for a Trip to Morgan's Wonderland in July!**
Some Central Arkansas dance students will soon have an opportunity to perform at a new theme park in San Antonio, Texas. These are not just ordinary students. These are extra-ordinary students in the “I CAN! Dance” class for children with disabilities.
The dance class began in Saline County in 2004, but has spread to other areas like Conway and Hot Springs.
Each class has students with disabilities like spina bifida, Downs syndrome, autism and epilepsy. “Dancing Buddies,” typical dance students, assist those who need more one on one help.
About 50 dancers and their families from Central Arkansas will be featured performers at Morgan’s Wonderland (www.morganswonderland.com) in San Antonio, TX on Sat., July 2.
The park opened last year for children with disabilities and includes park accessible fun like a music garden, Pirate Island Playground, a carousel, and the Wonderland Express train. An indoor “Sensory Village” includes a simulated test drive through San Antonio, an interactive video, and a “green screen” to allow future weathercasters to tell the forecast on TV.
The non-profit organization, Community Connections, which sponsors the class, is encouraging direct donations to help support this trip.
In the past, the I CAN! Dance class has made other trips to perform at Disney World, a national dance competition in Panama City, the Dallas Theological Seminary, and to audition for NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”
“These trips are about so much more than just a vacation,” said Julie Mayberry, I CAN! Dance founder. “Many families of children with special needs shy away from taking a vacation because of the stress related to it and the availability of it. This takes those worries away by providing a revenue source and since we travel as a group, the families feel more comfortable taking their special needs child. It is very healthy for the families to get away from the everyday stresses. The families bond and support one another during the travels.”

The I Can! Dance class is a free dance class offered to children with disabilities.
The class includes, but is not limited to, children with Spina Bifida, Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and autism. The goal for the class is to not only give these children the opportunity to perform on the stage with bright lights and fancy costumes, but to show to as many spectators as possible that these children CAN dance and have the same dreams and desires as other children.
The group has performed at numerous events, including a national dance competition, the Ms. Wheelchair Arkansas pageant, local churches, Christmas parties, and dance recitals.
The class also includes “Dancing Buddies.” These are traditional dancers who provide more one on one attention for the children who need the extra assistance to learn the routine, propel a wheelchair, move arms, or just keep focused.
