Recovery Walks 2010
September 25 10:00 am-2:00 pm Bushnell Park, Hartford, CT
Do you know someone who has struggled with a drinking problem or a drug addiction? Do you know someone in recovery? The answer to the chaotic destruction associated with addiction is recovery. Yes, people do recover and live productive alcohol and drug free lives. For the 11th consecutive year the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) will be hosting Recovery Walks! 2010, where thousands of people in sustained recovery will offer themselves as living proof that recovery is real. Last year, close to 3,000 people came to Hartford’s Bushnell Park in support of recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction. I’m writing to ask for your sponsorship.
The Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) is a nationally recognized, 501c3 non-profit, recovery community organization established in 1998 that promotes recovery through advocacy, education, and service. CCAR envisions a world where the power, hope and healing of recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction is thoroughly understood and embraced. CCAR, with a membership of more than 2,500, strives to organize the recovery community to:
1. Put a Positive Face on Recovery - The vast majority of people struggling with an alcohol or drug problem do not get treatment for their addiction. One of the major reasons for this is stigma. Stigma prevents people from seeking help. By speaking publicly about the reality of recovery, CCAR members put a face on recovery. CCAR members put a public face on recovery by testifying before the legislature and state commissions, as well as through well-attended public events like Recovery Walks! and…
2. Provide Peer-Based Recovery Support Services - Most treatment programs deal only with the front-end of the problem: usually a brief stay and you're done. Other kinds of support, such as transportation, housing, job training, simply don't exist in most communities. There's rarely someone who is going to help you find a place to live or help you put your life back in working order. This is where CCAR comes in; helping to bridge the gap between treatment and rebuilt productive lives. There are literally thousands of people in recovery in Connecticut. Most of them have a desire to "give back" and are contributing positively to local communities. By engaging an incredible volunteer force, CCAR offers recovery support services like Telephone Recovery Support, Family Education, support groups and access to other resources through a statewide network of Recovery Community Centers.
If any of these ideas resonate with you, I invite you to become a part of our movement by sponsoring our Walk. On Saturday, September 25, 2010 in Hartford’s Bushnell Park, Recovery Walks! will once again display the healing power of recovery.
