Hi gang! I'm busy raising funds for a trip, with a group of South Boston's young people, to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina rebuild their communities. For the last two years we worked in Mississippi and this year we will be in New Orleans. We started out with 10 kids and 7 working chaperones two years ago and last year we had 19 kids and 8 working chaperones.
Each of us came back changed from seeing the problems that still exist in that devastated area and thankful for the chance to help out. In our past trips to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi our youth worked diligently to build houses, clean up the community, and help in any way they could. One said, “As hard as it was, it never really felt like work because I knew I was helping those in need.”
This year we are bringing 20 kids and 10 chaperones to the heart of the 9th ward to continue their involvement in the re-building process.
Through this work our youth have the opportunity to serve while experiencing immense inner growth. They continue to become stronger, more unified leaders in their own community.
Help make this trip a reality for our youth as we work towards raising $20,000 to send our 30 participants. Please feel free to call Mayra Rodriguez-Howard at 617-464-7423, Linda Doran at 617-464-7463 or Dan McCole 617-464-4237 for more information.
Anything you can do would be greatly appreciated. This project is a collaboration between the South Boston Arts Association and the South Boston Community Health Center's Young at Arts Program. Together, through our arts program, we are doing great things!
