are currently working to raise awareness and funding for the Fistula Foundation which funds the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. This hospital provides fistula repair, prevention and educational programs throughout Ethiopia
WHAT IS OBSTETRIC FISTULA??
An obstetric fistula is a hole between a woman's birth passage and one or more of her internal organs as a result of obstructed labor during childbirth. When obstructed labor is unrelieved a woman is left with a hole between her bladder and vagina and sometimes between her vagina and rectum. This hole results in permanent incontinence of urine and /or feces. Most women who develop these fistula's are abandoned by their families and ostracized by their communities because of their foul smell and inability to have children.
There are high rates of Fistula in Africa and other remote areas of the world mainly because of the lack of available healthcare. Experts at the Hamlin Fistula Hospital estimate there are over 8,000 new cases of fistula every year in Ethiopia in addition to the 100,000 currently suffering from untreated fistula. The root causes of fistula are grinding poverty and the low status of women and girls. In Ethiopia, the poverty and malnutrition in children contributes to the condition of stunting, where the girl's skeleton, and therefore pelvis as well, do not fully mature. This stunted condition can contribute to obstructed labor which can cause fistula. Fistula's can be prevented by better maternal nutrition, healthcare and cesarean section when needed and can be repaired by obstetric surgery. However hundreds of thousands of women don't have access to even minimal health care
At the Hamlin Fistula Hospitals $450 will provide one woman with fistula repair surgery, postoperative care, a new dress and bus fare back home.
