On September 9th, 2010 our little Elliot Justin passed away after being born just one week earlier . When I was 37 weeks pregnant with him, he was diagnosed with an extremely rare birth defect, Vein of Galen Malformation. A vein in his brain had extra arteries coming off of it and the large structure was taxing his heart at an alarming rate. We were told after his first MRI that his chances of survival were very slim. When he was one week old he underwent surgery to block the excess arteries. Elliot sufferred a huge brain bleed during the surgery and passed away the next day.
We continue to treasure and remember the one week we had with Elliot. He was a peaceful and amazing soul. We wish that we could have watched him grow up. He will always be a part of our family, and we miss him as much today as the day that he died.
During Elliot's one week with us, he was in Children's Hospital NICU. The nurses and staff of the NICU were nothing short of amazing. They made it possible for us to hold him, they made sure we were able to do as much parenting as possible, they explained everything, they answered all of our questions, they gave us the space we needed, and were even shoulders to cry on. Mostly, they made this experience a little easier. In addition to the staff of the NICU, we encountered many other staff members throughout Children's Hospital who helped us through this.
Please help us honor Elliot's memory and support Children's Hospital so that other families can get the love and support they need during life's most challenging times. Better yet, come run with us! Al's run will be on the one year anniversary of Elliot's funeral and we can think of nothing better to do on such a difficult day.
