Fortune McLemore's Fundraising Page

Thank you for visiting my Personal Fundraising Page. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to contribute to my fundraising efforts. My mother, Dorothy Peterson McLemore, was a very creative person, who loved to sew, bake, crochet, and do other domestic arts. We were an Air Force family, and she was also proud of her time in the Air Force's Family Services unit, helping families adjust to life in the service. Unfortunately, she also suffered from childhood family tragedies, physical illness, mental illness, and depression, particularly after my father died. She completed suicide in 1973. Since her suicide, my sisters and I have experienced the stigma that can come with being suicide survivors. We've been asked questions of a personal nature, and had people act strangely around us once they learn the nature of her death. I am working with SPAN as a Field Liaison, because I want to do what I can to help reduce the stigma of suicide, and help survivors move on with their lives, as well as suicide prevention efforts. A wonderful book to read on the subject is "Touched by Suicide: Hope and Healing After Loss," by Michael Myers, M.D., and Carla Fine, who have both lost loved ones to suicide. There is also a quote by Jerry Reed, Executive Director of SPAN, and information on advocacy, and turning grief into action. The forward is by Kay Redfield Jamison, Ph.D., a noted mental health expert. It's published by Gotham Books, and is available on Amazon.com. Thanks for your support.
