Down & Dirty Mud Run

Down & Dirty Mud Run

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!

In January 2009, at the age of 32, I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. I had been experiencing all the classic ovarian cancer symptoms for quite some time: bloating, constipation, abdominal pain, and feeling full quickly, but was misdiagnosed by one doctor after another. Finally, after getting a CT scan which showed a 17cm tumor attached to my left ovary, I underwent surgery and received the diagnosis. I underwent chemotherapy until June 2009 and another surgery in March 2010 to remove hundreds of residual tumors in my abdominal cavity.

My latest CT scans from March 2011 show no evidence of disease and i'm now back and better than ever! To celebrate being in remission and to raise money for a most worthy cause, True North Treks, I will be participating in the Merrell Down & Dirty Mud Run In Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, PA on July 17th. I've been training for this Mud Run since mid-January with the help of my trusty P90X dvds, and now that the weather has gotten nicer, i'll be out and running.

So, why True North Treks?

This past September, I had the amazing opportunity to spend 5 days in the backcountry of Montana and Idaho through this organization. True North Treks, NFP serves young adult cancer survivors by providing wilderness treks in beautiful places around the U.S., and teaching "survivor skills for survivors." These skills include meditation and mindful awareness practices, as well as wilderness skills. True North Treks gives young adult survivors the opportunity to connect with their peers, challenge themselves physically on a wilderness trek, and re-connect with themselves away from the rigors and obligations of life at home.  This experience was, without exaggeration, absolutely life changing. I hiked into the woods of Montana feeling ravaged by the physical and emotional toll of cancer, and left feeling renewed, strong, brave, proud, and at peace.

In support of young adult survivors who often have medical bills, insurance payments, loss of pay due to medical treatment, and the challenge of being in the early stages of a career, the treks are offered to participants regardless of their ability to pay. As an alumni, I am hoping to "pay it forward" by raising money for another young adult survivor to have the same opportunity I had.

DONATE NOW AND SUPPORT PROGRAMMING FOR THE SUMMER OF 2011! Make it possible for a young adult survivor to attend a trek without worrying about a financial burden. All donations are tax-exempt and can be made right through this webpage.
