yogaHOPE TIMBo Initiative in Haiti

Dear Family,Friends and Yoga Community,

Since the 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince Haiti, the formation of tent cities (makeshift camps of 20,000 to 30,000 people) has also led to a widespread increase in sexual violence. Everyday women and children are raped and re-traumatized with nowhere to turn for protection. To help in the humanitarian effort to provide safety and education, yogaHOPE—a Boston-based non-profit organization providing access to yoga-based mindfulness classes for underserved women in trauma recovery—is partnering with Amurt-Haiti—a Port-au-Prince organization creating safe spaces for  women and children who have suffered from physical and sexual violence in the camps so that they can find support and start to heal from the trauma.

Through this partnership, yogaHOPE is training Haitian Community Leaders in a powerful Trauma Informed Mind Body (TIMBo) program that integrates a yoga and mindfulness based curriculum for those who have experienced trauma. Once trained they will be delivering the program throughout Haiti. I took this training in January. It was empowering and deeply healing in ways I am just beginning to recognize and to hear the women speak in the video only strengthens my confidence in the power of this program.

I now have the opportunity to join yogaHOPE and Amurt-Haiti for the next TIMBo training, April 13-17, 2012—in Haiti!  To do this, I must raise $3500 by April 11th, so am asking for your support. Please take a moment to watch this inspiring video of yogaHOPE’s innaugural training in Haiti in February.

100% of the money I raise will go directly to this initiative. The individuals trained in these videos will receive their salaries from these funds. The funding will also allow our trainers to continue to work side by side with Haitian Community Leaders until they are ready to train individuals in this program themselves. Here is another powerful video of one Haitian leader expressing how much he thinks the program will help survivors of sexual violence.

Please help by donating to my fundraising page here; $100 will pay the salary of one Haitian Community Leader for an entire month. Your contribution will bring healing, joy and renewed life to so many in a place that has been devastated by so much suffering.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and for any amount you can contribute. Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts. And please forward this to anyone who you think might want to contribute.

 Much Love,
