Runner for the 2017 MS Run the US Relay

What:  The MS Run the US – Relay is an annual 3,100-mile relay run across America for the MS cause.

The Relay begins each year mid-April near Los Angeles, CA and finishes mid-August in New York, NY.  To participate, each runner commits to running 160-miles over 6 consecutive days during his or her assigned Relay segment. There are 18 segments total spanning from LA to New York, thus 18 runners on the Relay team. Once selected, each runner spends months training and fundraising as they prepare to devote one week on the road with the nonprofit while completing their segment’s miles. Donations are given to fund research for a cure through the National MS Society and the Center Without Walls, and to assist those living with disability from MS.

My Story:

My story begins from the earliest moment I can remember. All but a few memories of my grandfather were of him unable to move in his bed. I do remember a few times he sat in a wheelchair, but that was about it. That was what I knew of MS while I was growing up. He passed away when I was 13 and I thought that would be the end of my experiences with MS. That was unfortunately not the case. When I was about 15 my mother was diagnosed with MS. This, of course, had a large impact on our family. We got involved in MS walks over the years and my mother even organized some of those.

Over the years my mother has continued to fight this horrible disease with gooddays and bad. She enjoys time with her 4 grandchildren and spoiling them to no end. In the summer of 2016 the athletic director received an email from a group that was running a relay across the country and wanted to know if I and other would like to join him for a little run through my small town. As the track and cross country coach he sent it to me and I was immediately interested because of the cause they were fighting for. I, and some of my runners, met and ran a few miles with Curt Ehlinger and I was instantly interested in being part of this.

I have been running for many years and am always looking for a way to help others through running and this was a great way to do that. So, with the encouragement and support of my family, and the encouragement of Curt I signed up for this great event. My family and other people that I know that are living for this disease are the reason I run. Every dollar earned and every mile run is one step closer to finding a cure. I hope you can help us make this dream a reality.
