Jill Appleby was born in Tacoma on August 14, 1957, and passed away on May 31, 2013 after a relentless three-year battle against Ocular Melanoma. The only daughter of June and Austin Appleby, Jill grew up in Tacoma, attending Delong Elementary, Hunt Junior High, and Wilson High School, from which she graduated in 1975. Jill attended the University of Washington where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. She graduated in 1979 with a degree in Communications.
Jill then made her home in Gig Harbor, where she raised her family. She was a life-long Husky and long time season ticket holder. Jill loved the outdoors -- skiing, the beach, camping, and golf. She was an avid runner, competing in the 113th Boston Marathon in 2009. Jill spent her last seven years with the love of her life and best friend, Mike Wells. From trips to Hawaii to riding in a hot air balloon, they lived life to its fullest. She loved being with him at their homes in Manhattan Beach, CA and in Bellevue, WA.
Jill was preceded in death by her parents June Shields Appleby and Austin F. Appleby, Jr. She is survived by her daughters Britt and Marci Neufer and sons Jack and John, her partner Mike Wells, brothers Wayne (Lorraine) and Scott (Kat), numerous nieces and nephews, many dear friends, and her beloved dog Raider.
A quote from Jill's memorial sums up her view on life and her passion for living it to the fullest. It can also be found at her park bench in the Bellevue Park next to Bellevue Square. Stop by, read it and spend a few moments with her if you are in the area.
"Some say all good things must come to an end.
My thought....time to move on to new good things."
