At West House, our 18-bed personal care home helps those with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, developmental delays and other physical and mental health challenges live far better lives. I’d like to tell you about a few of them.

Polly, 76, never learned to read or write, presumably because no one ever tried to teach her. Though she had signed her name with a simple "X" her entire life, a West House staffer taught her how to write both “Polly” and her last name in one afternoon.

Rick’s progress was even more impressive. At 74, he suffered from developmental delays and hadn’t spoken in over a decade. Seven months into his stay at West House, he suddenly said “Thank You” after receiving an afternoon snack. And, though Rick still wouldn’t speak to doctors, nurses or other medical personnel, from that point on he spoke non-stop to West House staff and fellow residents.

Before West House, Paul was living in his brother’s unheated basement and sleeping under a threadbare blanket. Just 48, the malnourished man weighed 86 pounds and looked about 70. After a year at West House, Paul had gained more than 40 pounds and his health had improved dramatically. Shortly thereafter, he was able to move out on his own.

People of all ages have benefited from West House’s care. Will was born with spina bifida and spent his entire life in foster homes. When he turned 18, his foster family – which no longer received financial incentives to provide for his care – kicked him out. Homeless, penniless and coping with years of chronic, untreated medical issues, he moved into West House. Gradually, Will’s condition improved. After two years, he was applying to colleges and making plans to major in social work so he could help people like himself receive access to better health care and social services.

As winter approaches, West House residents like these desperately need your help. Our small, non-profit personal care home depends on donors like you to cover the costs of food, laundry, staffing and especially fuel. Unfortunately, as you can imagine, the cost of providing these services is substantial and is increasing by leaps and bounds. And that is why we’re turning to you for help: our utility bills are well over $10,000 a year but you can help for just a few pennies.

$1.32 will provide an hour of heat, keeping our beloved residents warm and cozy in their home. While $1.32 might not sound like much to you, it makes all the difference to those most in need, which is why we’ve started our Hour of Heat Fundraiser.  You can give as much or as little as you want, as you see just pennies can make a huge difference.

A donation of $1.32 provides one hour of heat.
A donation of $31.68 provides one day of heat.
A donation of $95.04 provides three days of heat.
A donation of $221.76 provides one whole week of heat.

So, please take this opportunity to help the most needy residents in our community this holiday season. Your support for West House at this critical time will make a tremendous difference to those in need.
