Spring is here and Red Door Animal Shelter is preparing for the eleventh annual Gimme Shelter! Walk for the Animals! On Sunday June 12th, over 300 animal lovers will gather at Indian Boundary Park for Red Door’s largest fundraiser of the year.
Believe it or not, I have participated in the walk for the last TEN years! Why do I come back year after year? Because as a formerly homeless dog myself I know first hand the life-saving work of Red Door Animal Shelter. I believe in second chances and want to help as many animals in need as I can.
Need a little inspiration? Here’s my story:
The Sad Part - My story started like millions of other abandoned dogs and cats. Nine years ago, I was thrown away like trash, frightened, hungry, and filthy. Witnesses say my former owner walked away laughing.
However, I was one of the lucky few, rescued by Red Door and sent almost immediately to a foster home (with my mom). I hid for months, avoiding eye contact and cowering when anyone approached me.
The Happy Part - It took a long time, years of self-reflection, doggie treats, and reassurance from my feline siblings, but eventually I emerged from behind the couch and joined the family. And life has been GRAND ever since!
This year’s walk is EXTRA SPECIAL for me because I am the Captain of Team Dog. Of course, this is a HUGE honor and one I take very seriously! The Dog Team has come in third behind the rabbits and cats for the last two years, but 2011 is OUR YEAR!
Please consider making a donation in celebration of second chances and if you are in the area, please join us! All proceeds from the walk benefit the hundreds of cats, dogs, and rabbits rescued by Red Door every year. Please help!
