Running in 2017 for Brookline Education Foundation

On Monday, April 17, I'll be running the 2017 Boston Marathon, as part of Team Brookline! The proceeds of my fundraising will go to support the Brookline Education Foundation, an organization that is very close to my heart.

Is there a teacher who truly changed your life for the better? I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to answer this question with a resounding yes, as I think back on Mr. O'Connor, my 10th grade English teacher, who taught me the power of the written word and ignited my passion for reading and writing. As I consider the years of school that lie before my own three young children, my greatest hope for them is that they, too, will encounter at least one teacher who inspires, motivates, and impacts them in this same way, illuminating for them their own potential.

Here in Brookline, we are fortunate to have a wonderful public school system, dedicated to meeting the needs of its diverse students--and at the heart of this system is Brookline's talented and dedicated teachers, who are on the front lines with our children every day.  For 35 years, the Brookline Education Foundation has supported Brookline's educators by raising money to fund professional development, enrichment, and renewal opportunities they would not otherwise have due to budget and other restraints. I have been on the board of this incredible organization for three years, and the experience has been nothing short of inspiring. I have seen not only the impact that the BEF's grants have on teachers, but the dazzling ripple effect they have as teachers return to their classrooms and their students with renewed knowledge and purpose.

I have never run a marathon before-only cheered from the sidelines, wondering, quietly, what it would feel like to be on the other side of the barricade. And then, not so long ago, as I was finishing up a morning run, a thought came to me without much warning:  "Maybe I can actually do it!" And so here I am, weeks past my 40th birthday, with three children under the age of 6, preparing to run the Boston Marathon! When I'm not feeling pertified, I am feeling more ready than any other time in my life take on such a challenge. The moment I feel weary or defeated out on the course, I will think of the marathon Brookline's teachers run for our children every day, and I know I will be inspired to keep going that extra mile...or 26!
