Almost a year after Super Typhoon Haiyan hits Philippines. Central Visayas recovery mode is in full swing.
Please help support in the rebuilding through our Transitional and Permanent homes solution.
Our native and beloved Philippines was once again devastated by another catastrophe of unprecedented proportions. As if magnitude 7.2 earthquake was not enough, Typhoon Yolanda with maximum sustained winds of 195 miles per hour (314 km!), hit land in the Visayas region at around 5:00 A.M. Friday (PH time), clearing and destroying virtually everything along the way.
"I don't know how to describe what I saw. It's horrific." This was what a senior government official said after touring the devastation in Tacloban City in a helicopter.
Initial reports said three people died. Twenty-four hours later, reports said 1,200 were killed, most by drowning due to storm sea surge, which could have reached 15 meters. In Tacloban City alone, around a hundred casualties were reported, including children who died inside an evacuation center that collapsed due to strong winds.
Thirty-six provinces are affected. The typhoon has a radius of 600 miles. So, virtually, people had no place to go while the winds were blowing at its peak which lasted four hours.
The United Nations is now estimating that as many as 10,000 deaths could result from Typhoon Yolanda, the most powerful this year. Destruction to crops and properties are massive. Electricity is down. Water resources are down. Computers are down. Almost everything is down. We don't know how long.
