I am Rory Kinane, and I am excited to to announce I will be attending the 2013 World Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea from January 26 to February 6. I will be joining two other athletes from NC to represent Special Olympics Team USA. I will be competing in speed skating. I have never attended a World Games event before, so I am very excited that I was selected.
I have been involved in Special Olympics North Carolina for 6 years. I love being around the ice rink as I play hockey too. I try my best each and every time I am on the ice playing hockey or speed skating. I am excited that all of my hard work is getting rewarded by a chance to attend and compete in the 2013 World Games. Participating in Special Olympics and working with my coach Tappie Dellinger has introduced me to a lot of great people and new friends. I feel right at home at the rink and on the ice.
When I am not at the rink, I enjoy working on my 1969 Chevelle. I also enjoy watching Nascar. Attending school is something I also enjoy, and my favorite subject is math. I have received an Academic Excellence award in Math and English. I also received a Most Improved award in Science and Social Studies as well as a Certificate of Achievement for 3 years for A/B Honor Roll. In 8th grade, I received an Order of the Falcon Award for overall achievement. I also recieved a Coaches Award in 8th grade for the Quail Hollow Middle School track team. I ran the mile and half mile.
As you can see, I try to be the best that I can be in sports and in school. I always give 100%, and I hope my hard work pays off by bringing home the gold medal.
I need to also thank my dad, Rod, for spending all of those hours practicing with me at the rink and introducing me to the sport of hockey. Without my Dad's motivation and passion for the sport of hockey and skating, I wouldn't have spent so many hours at the ice rink and may have missed out on this wonderful opportunity to represent Special Olympics Team USA in South Korea. My Dad will forever be missed, but he will always remain a positive influence on my life. We have a family pact to always make him proud of us, and I look forward to doing that at the 2013 World Winter Games.
