Dear Friends and Family,
According to the American Cancer Society, this year in 2006, approximately 212,920 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among American women. It is also estimated that, in illinois, approximately 1,780 women will die of breast cancer this year.
This year, I have chosen to make a difference in the fight for breast cancer by Running Pink. I have committed to running the 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon and raising much-needed funds as part of the "Pink Streak" team for the Illinois Affiliate of Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization.
We are all affected by breast cancer in some way. According to the American Cancer Society, between 1993 -1997, in Illinois, the rate of breast cancer was 108.1 per 100,000 residents and the rate of death because of breast cancer was 26.7 per 100,000. I am not big on statistics, but this set is personal. My aunt, Shirley Traback - who I affectionately called TwoMamma, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. After many medical ups and downs and trying all of the treatments we could, Shirley lost her battle with breast cancer on October 18, 1996. Loosing Shirley was devastating for my family. The 3 years after she died, my mother and I walked in the Y-Me Race Against Breast Cancer on Mother's Day. This October is the 10th anniversary of loosing Shirley and I have decided that I will be running the 26.2 miles in her honor.
The mission of Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization pretty much says it all: this amazing organization works to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone. With all of the cases of breast cancer comes a huge need for support, to help the women and men recently diagnosed, to help the friends, partners, and caretakers of breast cancer patients. Y-ME Illinois does just this - and so much more.
The Illinois Affiliate works right here in my community, implementing programs and services free of charge to all those facing breast cancer. Some of these include support groups, educational programming and public outreach, a wig and prosthesis bank for women with limited financial means, and a state-wide grassroots advocacy program that works to secure governmental funding of research and access to high quality health care for all.
I am asking for your help! I am required to raise a minimum of $750 as part of the Pink Streak team for Y-ME Illinois. My personal goal however is $1,500 for this incredible organization. With your help I will be able to do that. While I encourage you to be as generous as possible, and amount will be greatly appreciated and make a difference!

I will be facing a tough summer of early morning long runs, energy bars, gel packs, and sore muscles. But I know that those dealing with breast cancer face a much tougher challenge every day of their lives. I am committed to making a real difference for all of those touched by breast cancer, and appreciate your participation in my endeavors.
