On March 11, 2011 magnitude-8.9 earthquake hit off the shore of Japan, unleashing a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and leaving enormous destruction in its wake.

Thousands have been killed in this disaster and many more have been left homeless, as the tsunami swept through, causing mass destruction and setting off widespread fires that burned out of control.

To lend support to the people of Japan, several bay area startups are hosting a benefit to raise money to directly support the children of Japan.

100% of proceeds will go to Save the Children Japan, an organization that is building infrastructure in Sendai and other affected regions to support orphaned and ill-affected youth

Save the Children has opened the first child-friendly space in Japan, protective environments where children can gather to play and share their experiences under the supervision of trained, caring adults. This enables parents to search for those who are still missing or begin the process of rebuilding their lives.

If you are interested in finding more infomation on how they plan to use the funds raised, we believe you will find this link helpful.www.savethechildren.org/atf/cf/%7B9DEF2EBE-10AE-432C-9BD0-DF91D2EBA74A%7D/save-the-children-japan-earthquake-brief-20110317.pdf

Save the Children is an extremely well run organization. It has a long track record of effectively responding to disasters. It has won numerous awards for it's effectiveness in translating donor dollars into action. In 2010, Save the Children received its ninth consecutive four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the highest possible rating.
