Promoting global education, awareness, hope, and empowerment to children around the world!
Thank you so much for visiting my fundraising page!
My fundraising effort is for a wonderful organization called Room to Read. Room to Read is an awesome organization that focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty in developing nations through education. The founder, Jim Wood, realized this need when he was trekking through the
Himalayas during a vacation in 2000. He met a local school liaison who invited him to tour a school in a nearby village. Mr. Wood was stunned when he learned that children's books were not available in schools. Instead, he learned that books were considered such a novelty that the few books that the schools had, mainly non-children's books left by backpackers, were kept in locked cabinets! This made him think back to the huge role that books had played in his own childhood and he couldn’t imagine children living in a world without access to this experience. He asked if there was anything that he could do to help and his new friend just asked that he help him get books for the children. Mr. Wood vowed to return with 500 books. Once he returned home and began emailing friends and family for support in this initiative, he was able to return with 3,500 books! Fortunately, his efforts didn’t end there. Since making this discovery in 2000, Jim Wood has since created Room to Read which has served as the vehicle for partnering with those communities to develop and stock libraries, build new schools, and spread the initiative to other developing countries with the same needs. Room to Read has built over 5,100 libraries and plans to build 10,000 libraries by 2010! You can read about this fascinating journey in Jim Wood's book, Leaving Microsoft to Change the World: An entrepreneurs’ Odyssey to Educate the World’s Children. It is an incredibly fascinating and moving journey that is continuing today with our help!
Approximately 770 million adults in the world are illiterate and an additional 100 million children are not currently enrolled in primary school – that’s nearly 1 billion people who do not have basic reading and writing skills. Room to Read seeks to improve these conditions by establishing thousands of libraries and filling them with books that will give children an opportunity to expand their horizons, nurture their natural curiosity and their ability to think, and gain an education that will help break the cycle of poverty that plagues the developing world.
“Books, to the reading child, are so much more than books – they are dreams and knowledge, they are a future, and a past.” --Esther Meynell, Noted English Writer
Room to Read’s Successful Approach to addressing the problem of rural education consists of:
-Partnering with communities to build schools through the Challenge Grant Program
-Establishing bi-lingual libraries
-Publishing local language children's books
-Establishing computer and language labs
-Providing long-term scholarships to girls
How we can help:
As you can see, there is a huge need for children's educational resources throughout the developing world, which is why I am enlisting your support via this fundraiser! Together, with the $4000 that we raise we could build a reading room in
Asia ($4000 = 1 Reading Room!), support the purchase of 4000 books ($1 = 1 Book!), OR fund 16 girls’ scholarships ($250 = 1 year of school!); can you believe how far one dollar goes?! I was amazed at how far a dollar could go, so upon learning about Jim Wood and Room to Read, I immediately logged onto the Room to Read website and donated money! I felt that there was more that I could do to help this cause and thus have created this fundraising effort.

If this cause resonates with you, I hope that you will join me in this effort to make a difference in the lives of these children. I also ask that you pass this information to anyone else in your network that you think this cause could resonate with.
On a personal note, I spent two months teaching children in Guatemala last fall through an organization called Global Vision International (GVI) in a school that these kids would not have had access to had it not been for the organization that I was volunteering through. These kids were absolutely amazing. They have so much amazing potential, if only given the opportunity to foster it. Organizations like Room to Read and GVI help make this possible. For additonal information on helping the kids that GVI Guatemala is working with, please visit the following link: www.justgiving.com/emmaastles.
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.
