I am competing in my first Half-Ironman race in Haines City, FL on May 20th. I will be swimming, biking and running a total of 70.3 miles in the event. When I registered for the race I saw a link to Miles for Melanoma which is a series of athletic events that allow participants to support the Melanoma Research Foundation and raise funds for melanoma research by getting sponsors for their event. Cancer of various kinds has attacked my direct family four times including losing my youngest sister to breast cancer when she was only 33 years old. I have always done all I can do to help fund cancer research so I was excited to see that I could make all of the miles I train and the hours I spend away from my family help find a cure for cancer while I completed a personal goal.
Here are some ideas that are meant to be purely fun - please donate whatever you like:
• Sponsor me at minimum wage on race day – It will take me about 7 hours to finish the race (hopefully 30 minutes less – but I’m getting old). Donate 7 times your hourly rate of your first job – or your parents first job- hard for me to do the math at $5 per yard mowed so do what you want.
• I’ll be covering 70.3 miles on race day – sponsor me for some multiple (or derivative) of that number
• According to Livestrong.com I will burn over 5000 calories on race day – how about a penny a calorie – or 500 calories for a dollar
• Come up with one of your own and share it when you donate – I’ll share your creativity via facebook – or not – your choice
I know times are tight for everyone – but please do what you can. It will help to keep me putting one foot in front of the other for the next few weeks and on race day. Help me get home while we help find a cure!
