MS Run the US, Inc. is dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research, while also supporting those living with disability due to MS. Our running events focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle while inspiring individuals to maximize their capabilities and become more active to help those in need.
What is MS?
As the National Multiple Sclerosis Society describes it, "Multiple sclerosis (MS) involves an immune-mediated process in which an abnormal response of the body’s immune system is directed against the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. The exact antigen — or target that the immune cells are sensitized to attack — remains unknown, which is why MS is considered by many experts to be 'immune-mediated' rather than 'autoimmune.'"
- Within the CNS, the immune system attacks myelin — the fatty substance that surrounds and insulates the nerve fibers — as well as the nerve fibers themselves.
- The damaged myelin forms scar tissue (sclerosis), which gives the disease its name.
- When any part of the myelin sheath or nerve fiber is damaged or destroyed, nerve impulses traveling to and from the brain and spinal cord are distorted or interrupted, producing a wide variety of symptoms.
- The disease is thought to be triggered in a genetically susceptible individual by a combination of one or more environmental factors.
- People with MS typically experience one of four disease courses, which can be mild, moderate or severe.
Being the Difference; Running Because I Can
I'm excited to be a part of finding a cure for MS by having the goal of raising $10,000. My client, Jaka, has been fighting this disease since 1997 and now she is having difficulty using her entire left side due to nerve damage. Watching Jaka struggle has been a very difficult process for me to watch. Running has changed my own life so now I want to use it to change someone else's.
My Running Journey
My running journey started in 2000 when I had three kids: ages 5, 2, and 11 months. I quickly realized that running was something I could do to help me recharge to become the mom I wanted to be without having to deal with a gym membership. All I needed was a good sports bra/good pair of shoes for my journey to begin. In 2003, my youngest son was born and I continued to run during my entire pregnancy (even completing a half marathon 3 months post partum). My kids now are 19, 17, 16 and 12.
The last 15 years have been filled with many different races: 20 marathons, 10+ half marathons, 50 milers, 12 hour events, 24 hour events, and various trail runs. "Today prepares me for tomorrow," has been a rule that I live by. It is such a great honor to be a part of this team.
A 3,000-mile relay run across America from Los Angeles, CA to New York, NY. The relay invites 16-18 chosen runners to run individual segments of approximately 200-miles in 7 consecutive days. Each runner commits to one-week on the road with the MS Run the US caravan running their individual 200-mile segment, while the entire Relay spans four months.
This year I will be running Segment 11 190 miles in 7 days June 20-26. http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/909822439
