Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

I would like to make clear at the outset that all monies donated will be going to the charity so no donations will be used to pay for flights or accommodation.

Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts. The site takes credit cards but not debit cards.

The Fund Raising Event

On 25th March 2012 a team of us are swimming in the 'Nevis to St Kitts Challenge' to raise funds for the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network (www.stkittsturtles.org) a registered charity, who need $75k to build a Sea Turtle Centre. The distance is 4km across open sea which is probably a walk in the park (or the nautical equivalent) for most triathletes. As most of you will know, I am more 'try athlete' than triathlete. I have not swum a mile yet alone 2.5 miles since I was 9 years old, so for me it will certainly be a challenge. I have started training in earnest to try to increase the chances of my making it across from one island to the other.

The Turtles
All 3 species of nesting sea turtles in St. Kitts, the leatherback, hawksbill and green turtle are listed as either critically endangered or endangered which by definition for them means they have lost more than 80% of their populations, primarily due to human impact. They are magnificent creatures the largest of which are considerably bigger than you or me! In St. Kitts the specific threats that face these animals include an annual open fishing season, habitat destruction, pollution, and poaching.

Sea Turtle Center
The St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network currently help to save these endangered species through night patrols and morning beach monitoring. They are working to build a Sea Turtle Center at Keys Beach the main sea turtle nesting beach in St. Kitts which would allow them to reach sustainability by offering Sea Turtle Camps, school programs, leatherback ecotours, and creating alternative livelihoods as well as serving as a year round tourist venue. The entire project will cost an estimated US$75,000 to complete. $18,000 has been raised already so that leaves just $57,000 to go.

Many thanks once again for your interest and support -- and please forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
