Kids in the Woods Walkathon 2012

Saturday, November 10, 2012

Hoffler Creek Wildlife Foundation is pleased to invite you to participate in our exciting Kids in the Woods project by attending the 2012 Kids in the Woods Walkathon on November 10, 2012 at 12 p.m.  All funds generated by the walkathon will be used to develop the Kids Trail at Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve into a wild, wonderful playscape for children.

A forest is a magical place for children. It is a place where they can free their imaginations and indulge their fantasies. They can create their own adventures, using the natural tools around them to bring their imaginary tales to life. They can run, jump, climb, swing, and crawl. They can dream, explore, discover, and learn about themselves and the world around them. Sadly, many, perhaps, most children today never experience the magic of the woods and the joy of learning naturally.

At Hoffler Creek, we aim to reclaim that joy for the children of Hampton Roads. We are preparing to unleash the power of nature play to transform young lives—physically, mentally, and socially. We know that nature play is an effective therapy for children suffering from obesity, attention deficit disorder, and depression. We also know that children who play outside regularly tend to function successfully in their home, school, and community. That is why HCWF has designated five acres of the state’s only urban wildlife preserve for interactive, natural play stations just for kids, aged 2 to 12.

With cash collected over the past year, we have already completed the conceptual design program for the trail and have begun site plans and construction drawings for the project. This year, we need to raise money to begin construction of the new Kids Trail. Our goal is to raise $20,000 from the community during the 2012 Kids in the Woods Walkathon.
