Our family invites you to join us in support of Anna’s Team at the Alma Highland Festival Series of Races on Saturday, May 26, 2012. Anna Elizabeth Frutiger passed away at the age of 23 on May 20, 2010 from a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and subsequent fatal Pulmonary Embolism (PE). She was healthy, happy and living her dream as she completed her first year of dental school at University of Pittsburgh. Her risk factors for DVT and PE were being on oral contraceptives and having traveled extensively immediately prior to her death. Her DVT was undiagnosed and we believe her death was preventable had she known and understood the signs and symptoms she was experiencing months before she died.
Part of Anna’s legacy has been the awareness that has been generated about blood clots, DVT and PE. The ongoing work of the National Blood Clot Alliance (www.stoptheclot.org) to educate and raise awareness about DVT and PE is critical to making the healthcare community and the general public aware of this sudden killer. Over 100,000 people in the U.S. die annually from a DVT/PE and up to 600,000 people are affected. This is more than die from breast cancer and AIDS each year in our country.
Anna loved the Highland Festival and participated as a highland dancer or as a runner in the Highland Festival race for many years. Anna was always committed to making life better for everyone she knew. Please join us in honoring Anna’s life and our family’s passion and committment to educate others about DVT and PE. Please be part of Anna’s Team on May 26th, 2012 by donating, running or walking.
Anna’s story has already saved many lives, has educated thousands and will continue to do so with your help and support. We welcome your contributions in supporting the National Blood Clot Alliance and Anna’s Team.
