My name is Ginger Kahler. I am 42 years old and 8 years ago, I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension (PH), a debilitating, life threatening illness with no cure.  It causes high blood pressure in the lungs, which produces progressive breathlessness and ultimately threatens life itself.  This illness literally takes your breath away, but there is hope for a cure!  It can affect small children, as well as the elderly, but most often strikes young women in the prime of their lives.

Recently a friend of both my husband and me, had a baby girl born 3 months early and diagnosed with PH.  Eloise “Ella” Bulkeley was born March 8, 2012 weighing only 1 lb 12 oz to Camille Dykstra & Matt Bulkeley at The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Children’s Hospital.  Due to complications she was placed on a ventilator for the first 2 months of life.  Although she was no longer intubated she failed to make any progress.  After caring for Ella for several days, a new member of Ella’s care team persuaded the doctors to do an echo which revealed severe PH.  She was immediately placed on inhaled nitric oxide (INO).  Over the past year she has had several good months only to be followed by setbacks.  After a succession of setbacks she recently required a tracheotomy and now they are in the process of weaning her off the INO.  Ella has never left the hospital and will remain hospitalized as long as she requires INO.  Their PH journey with Ella has been terrifying, exhausting & wonderful.

I am hosting the "1st Annual 5K Run/Walk & Kids PHun Run – Get Short Of Breath for Pulmonary Hypertension…Let’s Kick Some AsPHalt" in memory of Ella.
